'Workplace ISA' Plan To Supplement Pensions

A right-leaning think tank published a proposal for a 'workplace ISA' as an alternative to pensions and the Financial Times reported that the new pensions minister had commented favourably on the idea before her appointment to government.  While some Conservatives seem to believe pension tax reliefs are too costly, the real case for ISAs is that young people often feel they may need access to their cash, and age 55 (the earliest age for access to pension fund cash) is simply too long a wait.

Higher Rates Warning

A rise in the 'swap' rates paid by mortgage lenders signals that a rise in lending rates is coming, says the Telegraph. Swap rates have risen by about half a percent since April, yet mortgage rates have stayed steady or even fallen slightly. Mortgage brokers say a lack of demand for loans has forced lenders to be ultra-competitive.

Cash Compensation Limit Cut From 1st January 2016

From 1 January 2016, the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS) will reduce the compensation limit for savers from £85,000 to £75,000.

Wider Range Of Investments Can Be Held In An ISA Or CTF From 1 July

New Rules On Disguised Investment Management Fees

Finance Act 2015 also introduced new rules which apply to “disguised fees” arising to investment managers on or after 6 April 2015. Fee paying arrangements may need to be considered carefully, including existing arrangements as there is no grandfathering.

Flexi-Access Pensions, Death Benefits And Inheritance Tax

Flexi-access pensions begin on 6 April 2015.  Whilst the income tax position on death benefits has been clear for some time, there have been several questions with regard to the inheritance tax treatment.  We have now had substantial clarification of these issues from HMRC.

Final Regulations And Guidance Published On Additional ISA Allowance For Surviving Spouse

New rules have been published explaining how the additional ISA allowance available to the surviving spouse or civil partner of a deceased ISA holder from 6 April 2015 will operate. The final regulations provide more flexibility than draft regulations published in January 2015 and are supplemented by updated HMRC guidance for ISA managers.
